Heaven and Earth

EDGE Professional Development Program for Filmmakers
Artists who reside in Washington State are encouraged to apply to the 2009 EDGE Professional Development Program for Filmmakers. The EDGE Program offers a comprehensive survey of professional practices through a hands-on, interactive curriculum that includes instruction by professionals in the field, as well as specialized presentations, panel discussions and assignments. The EDGE Program provides artists with the relevant and necessary entrepreneurial skills to achieve their personal career goals and the opportunity to build community through peer support and exchange. The EDGE Program is open to emerging or mid-career filmmakers. Applicants must be residents of Washington State but cannot be graduate or undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program. Applicants must commit to completing the entire 50-hour program. Limited financial assistance and travel stipends for artists applying from outside King County are available. Artist Trust will offer one cycle of EDGE for Filmmakers in 2009. Deadline: September 15, 2009. Call for Artists - Bowie, MD
The City of Bowie, Maryland is seeking artists for two public art projects: 1) a kinetic sculpture, $80,000; and 2) a large working sundial, $100,000. Tide Pool Project - Kodiak Island, AK
Tide Pool Project is seeking submissions from fiber artists around the world to create a collaborative tide pool made up of textile stones, kelp, anemone, barnacles, octopi, crab, shells, and other related flora and fauna. The goal of this project is to create a textile tide pool that will bring awareness to the importance of coastal waters, and the delicate and critical role they play in the planet. Submissions may be no smaller than 2 inches and no larger than 6 inches in any direction. Artists may work in any textile discipline, and are encouraged to create 3D works or 2D surfaces with raised detailing and embellishment. Recycled materials are also acceptable. There is no limit to the number of objects submitted; however, submissions become the property of International Textile Tide Pool Project. Deadline: January 15, 2010. Grants for Manhattan Arts Projects
Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) is pleased to announce two grant opportunities for artists or arts organizations planning to present arts projects anywhere in Manhattan in 2010. Fund for Creative Communities (The Fund) provides grants of up to $5,000 to enable arts projects in Manhattan communities. Each year LMCC award grants in every arts discipline and for all corners of the borough, with an emphasis on supporting arts projects that are make a connection to a specific community. Artisphere 2010
The three-day Artisphere event gives arts patrons the opportunity to meet exhibiting artists while purchasing original works of art. Artisphere's goal is to make exhibiting in an outdoor setting as enjoyable an experience as possible. Artisphere's site extends throughout the West End Historic District of Greenville, South Carolina. Exhibitor booths are located along Main Street overlooking Falls Park on the Reedy River in the heart of Downtown. Market Square Walkway Pedestrian Bridge - Roanoke, VA
The City of Roanoke, Virginia and the Roanoke Arts Commission seek qualified artists or artist teams to design, fabricate and install artwork in the Market Square Walkway Pedestrian Bridge. The art will hang in the tower end of the bridge on a bracket that will support up to 1000 lbs. The Arts Commission desires artwork that will not only include a piece hanging from the bracket in the tower, but that may utilize other areas of the bridge so that the viewer's eye will be drawn to the hanging artwork. Border Art Biennial 2010 / Bienal Fronteriza del Arte 2010
The El Paso Museum of Art and the Museo de Arte Juarez announce the Border Art Biennial 2010, the first juried exhibition to examine and highlight the often under-represented, but vital art and artists from the states on the US/Mexico border: Arizona, Baja California, California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, New Mexico, Nuevo Leon, Sonora, Tamaulipas, and Texas. To emphasize the notion of collaboration, each Museum will exhibit one of two artworks by every artist selected. All works included will be be reproduced in the accompanying exhibition catalog. Lynnwood Recreation Center - Lynnwood, WA
The City of Lynnwood, Washington is seeking an artist/artist team residing in Washington or Oregon to create a site-specific exterior artwork for the Lynnwood Recreation Center. The Lynnwood Recreation Center is a friendly, community gathering place, where people of all ages and all incomes come to swim, exercise, use the sauna and hot tub, weight and exercise room. In addition to fitness and sports activities, center users also come for classes in art, dance or pre-school. Several exterior sites or "zones" for public art have been identified by the city near the Center’s front entrance. This selection process is a paid proposal process. The Northern Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce invites you to apply to be an exhibitor at the 25th annual ArtiGras, a three-day ticketed fine arts festival over Presidents' Day weekend attracting more than 150,000 art lovers and collectors. Police Memorial - Alexandria, VA
The City of Alexandria, Virginia seeks to commission public art for the Alexandria Police headquarters, currently under construction. The process will be managed by the Office of the Arts, a division of the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, with the Alexandria Commission for the Arts Public Art Committee. The City will conduct the search for qualified applicants through a Request for Qualifications (RFQ). The art will be paid for by private donations and grants. The purpose of the project is to recognize the service of Alexandria police officers to their community. The artwork will focus on the honor, integrity and sacrifice of Alexandria's fallen officers, past and future and will convey a message of honor, appreciation and remembrance rather than one of loss and sorrow. The Memorial will also provide an appropriate site for ceremonial activities of the Alexandria Police Department and the City. The Alexandria Police Department has lost seventeen law enforcement officers in the line of duty, the first in 1823 and the most recently in 1993. Deadline: October 30, 2009. Budget: $300,000. Childhood: An International Photo Exhibition
Amateur and professional photographers are invited to submit digital files of their color and black and white works to the Texas Photographic Society (TPS) for Childhood: an International Photo Exhibition, to be juried by Jamie Lee Curtis. Video Visitation Facility - Palm Beach County Jail System
Palm Beach County's Art in Public Places program seeks to commission artist(s) to make the experience of Palm Beach County's Jail Central Video Visitation Facility more pleasant for the thousands of public visitors who will use the new facility. Artwork will support the role the facility plays in facilitating connections and maintaining relationships between inmates and their family and friends. Desired artwork will create a calm, non-intimidating atmosphere that will also soften the facility's boxy architecture. The selected artwork will enhance the user's experience of the facility. Artwork must be durable, permanent, low maintenance and in compliance with ADA guidelines. Opportunities for art integration are located in the outdoor entrance plaza and sheltered seating area where visitors wait before they go indoors to conduct their video visit. Artwork enhancements shall enhance any of the following areas: three highly visible concrete tilt walls, the ground plane of the entry plaza and outdoor seating area (currently specified as 6,110 square feet of scored concrete), and planters with seat walls (to accommodate approximately 500 square feet of plantings). Dia de los Muertos Exhibition
The LoDi Project is asking artists to address the theme of Dia de los Muertos, which is a traditional Latin American festival that honors and celebrates the lives of family and friends who have gone before us. Traditional and non-traditional styles and media are welcome, including but not limited to: watercolor, oil, and acrylic painting, drawing, pastels, mixed media, fabric, printmaking, aerosol, collage, photography, digital illustrations and graphics, etc. The exhibit will provide a unique opportunity for those unfamiliar with this tradition to learn how countries throughout Latin American celebrate this day, which is commonly known in other cultures as All Souls Day. Cincinnati Park Board Artist Registry - Cincinnati, OH
The Cincinnati Park Board invites professional artists to submit portfolio images, resumes and statements for its Artists Registry, from which artists will be selected for public art commissions for Cincinnati Riverfront Park and other future opportunities. These art opportunities will be offered as the Riverfront Park site develops and funding becomes available, and as other projects may develop. Honoraria will vary based on the scope of each piece planned. All mediums and techniques are eligible. Applications will be reviewed periodically by a knowledgeable panel comprised of Parks staff and selected professionals, and short lists of artists will be invited to submit proposals. Fountain Hills is a small, scenic desert community located east of Scottsdale, Arizona and is about 45 minutes from Sky Harbor International Airport. The town is surrounded by spectacular, majestic mountains with views including Four Peaks, the Superstition and McDowell Mountains. Thunderbird Artists unites with the Fountain Hills Downtown Business Community for this event which is held on the picturesque Avenue of the Fountains. Sheriff's Office West County Sub-Station - Palm Beach, FL
Palm Beach County's Art in Public Places program seeks to commission artist(s) to create integrated artwork for the new Palm Beach Sheriff's Office (PBSO) West County Sub-Station. Artwork shall create a welcoming and calming environment at the Sub-Station's outdoor entrance and increase the facility's visibility to pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Artwork will create a unique identity for the Sub-Station and humanize its scale, in contrast to the monolithic building in which it is situated. Artwork will also reflect PBSO's role as a community partner and its commitment to positively influence youth of the West County region (Call to Artists for youth program descriptions). Opportunities for art integration include concrete walls, canopy support columns, railing along ADA ramp, seating, anti-ram bollards, bicycle rack and trash receptacles. Artwork must be durable, permanent, low maintenance and in compliance with ADA guidelines. Coconino Center for the Arts
Flagstaff Cultural Partners (FCP) in Northern Arizona is now accepting proposals for 2009, 2010 and 2011 for special opportunities to curate exhibitions at the Coconino Center for the Arts. FCP offers a 4,000 square foot gallery accompanied by a smaller Jewel Gallery that is 270 square feet. The proposal can include opportunities for single artists, small or large group shows, invitational and/or juried shows. As a benefit to this partnership, Flagstaff Cultural Partners will provide the venue, staff assistance, installation, on-site insurance, and marketing for the show. Successful proposals will meet the criteria, complement FCP's mission, and be a collaborative endeavor with Flagstaff Cultural Partners. Located just minutes from downtown Flagstaff and nestled in the Ponderosa pines, the Coconino Center for the Arts saw around 20,000 visitors last year, with that number increasing every year. Solo Exhibition Opportunity - CoLAB Projects

Fifth and Walnut Streets Parking Garage - Columbia, MO
The City of Columbia, Missouri, invites artists to apply for a public art project at the planned Fifth and Walnut Streets Parking Garage. The City seeks an artist or artist team to create new site-specific, original, public artwork(s) for the garage. Works in a variety of durable media and forms will be considered. The project is a component of Columbia's Percent for Art Program, established in 1997, and is being implemented by the city's Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA). Artists should submit qualifications only, not a design proposal. The budget for the site-specific public art at the Fifth and Walnut Parking Garage project has been established at $110,000. The amount must include all artist fees, materials, fabrication, shipping, installation, etc. To be eligible to apply, artists must reside legally in the United States. Veterans' Memorial - Las Vegas, NV
The City of Las Vegas (City) hereby invites individual artists or an artist team (Offerors) to submit written Statements of Qualifications (SOQs) to create a profound and lasting work of art in honor of America's service men and women. The Veterans' Memorial is being funded by Las Vegas Veterans' Memorial, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. The Las Vegas Arts Commission and an evaluation committee will select a finalist that will work with the Las Vegas Veterans' Memorial in preparing a design. The design will need to integrate an expandable commemorative component, such as a brick walkway, commemorative wall, or digital reader, where donors can pay tribute to family members or others who proudly served in the armed forces. The successful offerors and finalist will also be asked to submit a design for perimeter fencing to surround the entire park. All design proposals will need to be pedestrian friendly, ADA compliant, and vandal resistant to the extent feasible. The finalist will be required to provide any structural and electrical engineering plans for the memorial, submit the plans for review and approval by the city of Las Vegas, fabricate the memorial, and install the memorial at Huntridge Circle Park. Each successful offeror will need to prepare a budget which will include all costs associated with the fabrication, installation, and maintenance for the work of art. The Finalist will be responsible to deliver the artwork complete and fully installed. All design intellectual property rights, fabrication, labor, materials, transportation, installation, insurance, engineering, landscaping, permitting, and contingency and every other related cost is the sole responsibility of the Las Vegas Veterans' Memorial which the Finalist will contract through. Deadline for Submission: October 29, 2009, 1:30pm Pacific Standard Time (PST). Budget: $800,000. Open to all artists or design groups. No geographic requirements. Process: Four successful offerors (a.k.a semi-finalists) will be invited to submit design proposals. Each will be required to visit Vegas twice - one time to view the site and another to present their proposal. Each will receive a $5,000 honorarium. Anticipated award date: April 2010. The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia (CAC) invites artists from across the Commonwealth to submit works for New Waves 2010, its annual multi-media juried exhibition. As the leading contemporary art institution in Virginia, CAC provides an opportunity for Virginia artists to gain professional and public recognition through New Waves 2010. Theme: In conjunction with CAC's "Where the Wild Things Are: Maurice Sendak in His Own Words and Pictures" exhibition, this year's New Waves challenges Virginia artists to submit works that contain narrative elements and/or in some way tell a story.
