A Constant Vital Commotion
October 10-30, 2009. ArtistsRegister.com member Monica Aissa Martinez's new series includes mixed media works on canvas and paper. Her compositions, through the strong use of line and color, represent the intricate connection within and between body and mind. The work explores in a rich, complex and exciting manner, life in its very basic form. Who and/or what am I? is the question. A constant and vital commotion is the answer. Sound to accompany the exhibit. The Eric Fischl Gallery, 202 W. Thomas Ave., Phoenix, AZ.

COLORADO

The Power of Then
Exhibition continues through January 11, 2010. The Power of Then highlights contemporary Latino/Chicano artists that utilize popular cultural artifacts and their associated memories to create grand visual statements. The Latino/Chicano experience is a myriad of perspectives that mix into a multi-dimensional scene. From the streets of San Antonio to the coastal areas of California, the Chicano/Latino imprint is so diverse that it cannot be labeled - though many have tried. There is a certain playfulness, a touch of crass, a deep pocket of traditions, countless layers of colors, a bit of revolution and, of course, many loving memories of family. It is seen in the trinkets bought at the mercado to the religious icons placed in home altars. When purchasing a Chicano artifact--a pinata for a birthday party, a fan for the hot days to come, a molcahete for the kitchen, a beaded saint bracelet for a new, hip look--one is buying a memory, a tradition, and a history. The Latino/Chicano artists in this exhibition understand the power of these ornaments and have carefully raised their power with new translations and contemporary practice. The results present windows into this vivid cultural past and a hard view into the new trans-cultural reality. Artists: Ronaldo Briseno, David Almaguer, Alex Hernandez, Franco Mondini and ArtistsRegister.com member Linda Arreola. Museo de las Americas, 861 Santa Fe Dr., Denver, CO 80204. www.museo.org

You of all people! Here of all places!
Exhibition continues through November 6, 2009. You of all people! Here of all places! is RedLine's 1st anniversary exhibition featuring recent works by its 18 current residents and visiting artists: Linda Campbell, Terry Campbell, Sterling Crispin, lan Fisher, ArtistsRegister.com member Virginia Folkestad, Tom Guiton, Rori Knudtson, Bob Koons, Viviane Le Courtois, Laura Merage, Jennifer Miller, Margaret Newman, Alicia Ordal, Jeff Page, Bruce Price, Clark Richert, Jonathan Saiz, and Gretchen Schaefer. The title of the show speaks to the inevitable yet unexpected crossing of paths when so many artists, each with their networks of friends and supporters, overlap to form a community at RedLine. Coordinated by RedLine's resident artists Jonathan Saiz and Terry Campbell, the exhibit has only one curatorial link connecting the works: that each artist chooses to exhibit works made within the inaugural year of their residencies. RedLine's latest offering serves as a showcase of the real diversity of style, mediums and perspectives practiced within Denver's contemporary art community. RedLine, 2350 Arapahoe St., Denver, CO 80205.www.redlineart.org

Artist Opportunities

Pike Place Market Renovation - Seattle, WA
The Pike Place Market is seeking professional artists who have the ability to develop an in-depth understanding of the history and character of the Market and to communicate this understanding through their chosen medium. It is anticipated the selected artist or team will develop and install 1-4 projects. The installation date for the artwork is expected to be in May 2010. In 2007, the Pike Place Market celebrated its 100th anniversary. Born from citizen outrage at the rise in the price of onions from 10 cents to $1 per pound in 1906, the Market was saved from the wrecking ball by citizen vote in 1971. That vote defined the Market's current mission to include insuring farmers can sell directly to the consumer, giving small businesses the chance to incubate and grow, and providing services and housing for low-income people. Deadline: October 21, 2009. Budget: $100,000. For more information, contact Marlys Erickson at marlys@pikeplacemarket.org.

Materiality
ARC Gallery is proud to be hosting Materiality, a group exhibition juried by Jeanne N. Long, independent curator and Associate Director of Special Exhibitions, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. This juried exhibition aims to explore the place of material in contemporary art practice, encouraging innovative approaches to working with material--including but not limited to traditional domestic crafts, fibers, building materials, found objects, trash, etc. Immateriality is defined as having no consequence, and history often grouped craft, low-art, and the feminine as such. As the Do-It-Yourself aesthetic hits mainstream and the processes of the feminine domestic are re-invented into social activism, bricoleurs (matter makers) are at the forefront. So what is materiality in the 21st century? Artists should examine not only the value of material and its uses, but the meaning within formal, social, political, or ecological contexts. Deadline: December 16, 2009. For prospectus, go to: www.arcgallery.org/uploads/documents/Materiality%20%20(2010)%20Prospectus.pdf. ARC Gallery, 832 W. Superior, Suite 204, Chicago, IL 60622.

This is a highly visible opportunity for outdoor signature work(s) to be integrated into the Biomedical Campus and add to the landmark status of this key downtown site. The Arizona Board of Regents has selected a design team for the next phase of development on the campus, which includes the Health Sciences Education Building and ABC II. It is anticipated that the selected artist(s) will work closely with the City of Phoenix Community & Economic Development Department, campus tenants, Phoenix Water Department, the Office of Arts and Culture and the design team to develop and integrate a public art project into the design of the campus. Deadline: October 30, 2009. A complete copy of the rules and guidelines is available at phoenix.gov/arts. To receive a printed copy, call the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture at (602) 262-4637.
