Center for Railroad Photography & Art: 2010 Awards Program
As a part of its commitment to excellence, the Center for Railroad Photography & Art has established annual, national awards for outstanding contributions to railroad imagery. The goal is to continue expanding the definitions and interpretations of railroad photography, while honoring those who are making new artistic and creative contributions in the 21st century. Theme: Beyond the Locomotive. This year's theme challenges the photographer to understate (or even eliminate) the locomotive in the photograph and emphasize other aspects of the railroad environment. Throughout the history of railroad photography, some of the most memorable images are devoid of trains altogether. Photographers will be judged on their ability to demonstrate creative, technical, and interpretative excellence in new and unusual ways. Work that is suitable for gallery and museum display is encouraged. Deadline: December 31, 2009. Center for Railroad Photography & Art, 1914 Monroe St., P.O. Box 259330, Madison, WI 53725-9330. Jamaica Flux: Workspaces & Windows 2010
Jamaica Flux: Workspaces & Windows, a project of the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL) in Jamaica, New York is a site-specific public art exhibition that is mounted approximately every three years with the intention of using the urban environment as a studio and exhibition space. The project includes the commission, creation, and exhibition of site-specific projects, which are installed at a variety of locations along Jamaica Avenue, including banks, mall lobbies, stores, restaurants, street corners, parks, and other public spaces. This installment's theme is "Art as Action." Possible interpretations include: art that references the expressionistic tradition of gestural "action painting"; art that literally performs an action, such as performance or event; art that aims to solve social problems through constructive action, as opposed to art that merely represents or symbolizes social problems. JCALs curator, Heng-Gil Han has added a new component to Jamaica Flux: Workspaces & Windows 2010, a Video Slam which will coincide with the exhibition's opening in April. Twenty five videos related to the "Art as Action" theme will be selected. Interested artists may view the complete RFP at www.jcal.org. Applications are due by December 12, 2009 and a list of selected artists will be posted on JCAL's website by February 1, 2010.

Art in the Open - Philadelphia
Art in the Open (AIO) is a citywide festival that celebrates artists, their inspirations for creating art, and their relationships with the urban environment. Inspired by the tradition of plein air painting, AIO will welcome artists working in any medium or style to create art outside, on-site over a four-day period along the banks of the tidal Schuylkill River - from the historic Fairmont Park Water Works and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, south to landmark Bartram's Garden. During the day, partnering institutions will offer extensive opportunities for public engagement with the festival, showcasing the vibrant community of working artists, galleries and institutions that make Philadelphia a major Urban Art Center. On each of the four nights, a forum hosted by a local institution will focus a distinct lens on the relationship of the artist to his/her landscape. The AIO jury will select 30 artists from collected submissions: approximately half of those identified will be artists who live outside the Philadelphia area. A welcoming reception will be held in City Hall at the beginning of the festival accompanied by a curated show of participating artists' work. A closing exhibition and sale will be held on the final evening of the festival (June 12, 2010) at the Rosenwald/Wolf Gallery at the University of the Arts. Deadline: January 31, 2010.
